Wardrobe Colors

If you are like most people, you have trouble stepping out of your comfort zone when it comes to picking out clothes with bright colors because you might think it is too bright, or you cannot pull it off. That is normal so do not think you are the only one. I never thought that I was going to be able to pull off a pair of bright pink pants, but with the right fit, and the right pieces that you put with your colors, anyone can rock a color that compliments with their natural colors.

Let me give you the most important piece of advice that I was taught while I was getting my Fashion Stylist Certification: “bright colors accentuate, dark colors mask”. Meaning, if you want to accentuate a part of your body, wear something bright, Do not put it in black, brown, grey…the neutral, dark colors. Get a bright color. I will give you an example:

The woman below has a triangle body shape. “How do you know” you ask? Well I can tell because she carries some extra weight in the hips, thighs and buttocks, which makes it wider than the shoulders and waist, therefore, she is a triangle shape.

Because most women want to achieve that hourglass figure, we need to accentuate her shoulders and chest, and mask her hips, thighs and buttocks. I would therefore put her in a neutral color on the bottom, a nice boot cut jean or trouser if she is going to work. A pair of high heels with a pointed toe to elongate the leg to give the impression that she looks taller, a fitted medium low cut top (depending on her age of course) in a neutral color, and a bright colored blazer. To give you an idea, I posted an outfit that I would dress her in for work below.

Now there is such a thing as an inverted triangle shape…women who have smaller hips, thighs and buttocks, while they have the upper body of a swimmer. A lot of these women are athletes, however, people are of course normally like that, and it is nothing to be ashamed about! The figure below is an inverted triangle shape.

Because this woman has larger shoulders we need to even it out to get that hourglass figure that most women strive to have, that do not have it normally. Therefore, Color on the bottom, neutral color on the top. Let me show you.

Notice how the accessories are all low on the body…bracelets, a ring, an arm bag. Nothing is going on the shoulder, around the neck or in the ears because this will attract the eyes up to the broad shoulders.

Keep in mind, these are just two types of body types. I will blog about the other three at a later time!
